The Bouygues Construction innovation team have long been champions of bringing new ideas and solutions to look at new ways of tackling challenges across the industry. This is particularly the case in the area of Health and Safety for their workers where it is their absolute priority that their sites are safe and that their employees go home safely to their loved ones every day. Mobilus have been engaged in an Innovation partnership with Bouygues for a number of years since the early days as a start up looking at ways to improve communication on construction sites. This has involved testing, feedback and development of all three Mobilus solutions over a period of time including the mobiWAN, mobiRADIO hardware and mobiTALK app.

Challenge

Bouygues have identified that there is a significant scope for improvements to be made on construction sites in the way that personnel communicate.

Challenges include:

High noise and requirements to wear hearing protection on site, therefore limiting communication capability
Ensuring correct use of PPE and hearing protection when on site, especially when communication becomes difficult in higher noise areas
Limited number of radio channels for each site and limiting communication options
No capability for hands free communication using standard ‘Push-to-Talk’ (PTT) communication systems.
Alignment of digital transformation strategies and how they relate to on site communications using digital infrastructure such as WiFi or 5G.

Bouygues have therefore been exploring new technology solutions to overcome this communication hurdle and make communication clearer to improve safety and site performance.

Collaboration

Collaborating with Mobilus over a number of test sites Bouygues has tested the full suite of Mobilus solutions to assess different areas of possible communication.

The Mobilus solutions are deliberately designed to overcome challenges around communication on industrial sites, and indeed to challenge the existing paradigm of Push-to-Talk (PTT) radio communication.

It was determined through testing that the hands free nature of mobiWAN, combined with the ‘two way’ communication capability of the mobiTALK app could have significant impact on the way that communication was carried out on site, allowing operators such as crane banksman to continue communicating, while using their hands, rather than the traditional ‘on / off’ of radio communication.

Mobilus and Bouygues continue to partner through the development of new technologies and Mobilus recently began working with the Bouygues Reality Lab, an incubator for new technology within the company.
